In my time at SpotX, I have helped to onboard over 430 employees globally. We have employees in over 34 locations and multiple people starting every week. We have in-person onboarding sessions in regions all around the world throughout the day. The most exciting part about being a part of the onboarding team is having the opportunity to meet almost everyone in the company and help them acclimate to their roles.
Onboarding is imperative for employees to know that they made the right choice in your company. When onboarding is executed correctly and successfully, the more productive and successful people are, the more happy they are that they chose your company. So how do we go about onboarding at SpotX?
We keep it personal.
In a digital world, it’s easy to send documents, assign e-learning courses, send employees off to their teams, and hope for the best. This is not how we do it at SpotX. Every new hire is added to an in-person onboarding session on their first day, giving new hires a chance to make connections and meet with other important teams such as HR, Education, and IT. We go through the typical ‘this is who we are and what we do,’ but we equip hires after the initial session with additional information, and direct them to others within the company that can help them in their new journey.
The way we present information and our attitude in our in-person onboarding sessions makes a big difference in how people feel about the company and culture they just walked into. I try to ease new job stress and have a fun and open conversation while explaining different tools and resources new employees will use to get up to speed on their new roles. I’ve also taken a lot of time to know the culture and processes of each team so I can make the information as relevant to each new hire as I can. I’m open to questions and make sure employees know I’m always here as a resource, even years down the road. But, this is just day one; what else can a new hire expect?
We have many tools and resources to educate our new hires, whether they are new to the industry, new to the job force, or super experienced. Before their first day, we set new hires up in many different tools so that the moment they get setup, they can start learning. SpotX cultivates an environment of learning from day one through their time at SpotX. These tools empower our employees to learn, learn, learn. Our employees have access to 75+ internally created e-learnings, Lynda.com, and 1300+ knowledge base articles/videos to learn about our company, our industry, our products, or any soft skills they would like to develop.
We also have personalized learning paths for different roles in the company. Once they sit down on day one, the new hire knows exactly where to jump in. There are dedicated places for them to self-evaluate and ask questions and know where to find experts on different topic areas. Managers are encouraged to ask questions and engage with new hires along this learning path. These comprehensive plans help new hires through their first few months and are continuing to be developed to help them through their first year. Giving our new hires time to learn is very important to us. We understand it takes awhile to understand your new role and industry. We believe in our people and give them the tools and time to succeed. In addition to professional development we also encourage time to make friends at work.
We are a culture of fun.
At SpotX, we encourage a work-life balance and encourage team members to enjoy their time at work. We practice what we preach and make sure that new hires experience this right away. We have an employee whose role is solely to improve the employee experience — her entire job is to make sure employees are having a good time, connecting with their coworkers, and are celebrated for their hard work. She meets each individual within his or her first few weeks and helps them connect with others in the organization through different employee events and initiatives. This is just the beginning. Within a new hire’s first year, they get to have lunch with the founders of the company, giving them the chance to ask questions and know them on a more personal level. It’s a great chance to build a one-to-one connection.
What about meeting the other 600+ employees? We offer social programs to connect employees across all teams and locations so employees know everyone they’re working with. These groups are rotated monthly so employees have the opportunity to meet everyone. Additionally, SpotX offers everyday fun in the game room, breakfast each week, a fully stocked snack wall (my favorite), Mario Kart, wine and beer on tap, unlimited coffee and Bevi drinks, opportunities to volunteer in the community, and most importantly, manager encouragement to take advantage of all of these opportunities. This is our unique culture and we support fun beginning on day one.
We are committed to making our new hires successful. Want to see what our onboarding process is all about? Check out our careers page and apply today!
